Synopsis of Project

In spring/summer of 2019, Mass Poetry and collaborating artists François DeCosterd and Andrew Bablo will create an installation to be displayed in the Boston Properties building at 100 Federal Street (the Bank of America building) in Boston. We will make use of the large glass windows, a media screen, and the open space of the atrium. Mass Poetry is seeking verse from middle and high school students in Massachusetts to populate these installations. Selected text may appear as vinyl wrapping on the window, on the large-format media screen, on napkins or sleeves at Blue Bottle Coffeeshop, or as part of a Raining Poetry installation on the sidewalk.

Instructions for Teachers

Given the space and the time of year, we are working on the themes of “rebirth,” “growth,” “light,” and “windows.” Mass Poetry has provided two sample poems and writing prompts on each theme. Please work with your students to create poems that use the structure of the poems provided or encourage them to create their own work from the themes. We also recommend checking out haiku by Richard Wright for samples of short, topical work.

Along with poems, students MUST submit a release signed and dated by a parent or guardian.

Download the release.
Download thematic poetry samples and prompts.

Submissions are now closed. We will notify students whose work we are using in May, and the installation will begin in June.
